This is a nice collection of signs. They are quite popular in Europe. especially in the older towns. At a time when stores are specialized in their trades, it is possible to have these signs made barber shops, hat shops, shoe stores, etc. Now a days we have mega stores, it is much harder to make signs for them. What sign does one make for Macy, Sears, etc. I found a lot of them in Ireland. especially Dublin. Actually, the tour guide mentioned specifically that in Dublin looking for these special signs. They are not only hang in front of the stores, they are also imbedded into the side walk. I had some pictures of these from Dublin. These signs are not just limited to stores for advertisements, but also have land mark signs. For example, Dublin is well known for its writers, especially poets such as Yeats, we will find signs for them around some landmarks where they may had stayed in the past. You have to be very careful, b/c it is quite easy to miss them, since they are usually quite small in size and displayed discretely. Oliver and i had a wonderful time guessing what these signs stood for. I remember in Athens, we ran into a store had a specially made, large sign of a various of objects. We stood there for a long time and couldn't even guess what these objects are. It is around the ancient Greek Agora area, not the Roman one. We found them in Paris, but very few. May be if we visited ancient French cities there may be more. I don't recall seeing much of these in southern Europe, they are more popular in northern Europe.
